North Devon Lobster Stock Survey

A North Devon Lobster Survey commenced in May 2008 which will look at the lobster fishery in this part of Devon Sea Fisheries Committee area.  Fishermen are supportive of the survey, which will gather information on the number of fishermen involved, number of pots worked and location of pots in the area.  DSFC Officers are gathering further data whilst at sea with the fishermen on the number and size of lobsters caught and retained as well as the number and size of juveniles and berried lobsters being returned to the fishery.  
This is the first time such as survey has been carried out in Devon area by DSFC and will provide valuable information as to the extent, productivity and viability of the lobster fishery.  Running parallel to the survey in North Devon a potting effort survey is also being undertaken around Lundy Island which will map the areas fished, number of pots uses and catch per unit effort of fishing boats working in the area.
